The Democratic debates on CNN

One of these days I would like to be pleasantly surprised by the quality of something being done in the mainstream media. For that matter, I’d like to feel inspired by the Democrats either by any of the candidates or the party in general. Well tonight was not one of those nights. The CNN debate in Nevada seemed to have been intended far more as an installment in a politics themed reality show than as any attempt to inform Americans about the candidates policies or to provide air time for any but the front runners. Note to the Democratic party, this ain’t RealWorld-”Politics House”, its a real election in a very serious time in our history. We need real information and real answers from real people. Why aren’t we allowed to hear from the range of candidates running? Denise Kucinich was allowed to speak about 15 words. It was insulting. And yet every time he spoke he was met with thunderous applause. Why? Because he actually sounds like a real person and not a computer generated sound bite.

This is where the Democrats are failing us - by failing to stage substantive debates where real questions are asked and we can hear real policy discussions between ALL the candidates. The “politics as usual” complaints that are so often thrown around these days are directly about this - people are tired of the bullshit, and these debates were bullshit. If the best the Democrats can do to showcase their vision for America is to let Wolf Blitzer pit them into cat fights against each other while blatantly excluding half of their own candidates from the debates, fuck em. They don’t deserve to run the country. And yet who did we get instead the last two times around? Bush? Heaven help us.

If we ever somehow manage have an election where the choice is between Kucinich and Ron Paul, I’ll know that real change is finally afoot.
Here’s a good article on how lame it all was…
